General Interest

DOUBLE MEDALLISTS OWG 2022
With one gold and one silver medal he became one of six ski jumpers who won two medals in Beijing 2022. The others are Ursa BOGATAJ (SLO, two gold), Peter PREVC (SLO, gold and silver), Manuel FETTNER (AUT, gold and silver), Nika KRIZNAR (SLO, gold and bronze), and Karl GEIGER (GER, two bronze).

POST PYEONGCHANG 2018
It was the eye-opening experience at PyeongChang 2018 that made him aware of the opportunity in front of him and started a run of 15 wins in the next 20 World Cup events. By the end of the season, he was Japan’s first overall World Cup champion and the winner of the prestigious Ski Flying, Raw Air, Planica 7 and Willingen five titles. Became just the third jumper in history to complete a clean sweep of the legendary Four Hills event.

COACH
Japanese coach Hideharu Miyahira (JPN), 2002 Olympian, is one of only seven ski jumpers who received 20 points, the highest mark from all five judges, which is considered the “perfect jump.” Miyahira had his perfect jump on 8 Feb 2003 in Willingen, but he did not win the competition, he finished sixth.

Milestones

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Olympic champion in the Beijing 2022 normal hill event. He was in the lead after the first round and laid the basis for his victory so that a fifth place in the second round was enough to secure the gold medal 4,2 points ahead of Austria's Manuel Fettner.
Silver medallist in the large hill event. He was also in the lead after the first round, but his second place in the final round was not enough to stay ahead of Marius Lindvik (NOR).
Fourth place in the mixed team event and fifth place in the large hill team event.

Had just one World Cup podium place to his name (2017 team) when he made his debut at PyeongChang 2018 where he had three top-10 finishes (sixth in the team event, seventh in the normal hill, and 10th in the large hill). Left PyeongChang 2018 with some insight. “I met a lot of athletes from other disciplines during PyeongChang 2018 and with each meeting, a sense of my responsibility as a ski jumper grew on me." (olympics.com, 2 Mar 2020)

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Competed at three championships (2017-21) winning team bronze in 2019, and had five more top-five results.
At three Junior World Championships (2014-16), he won two bronze medals in 2016 (normal hill, team).

WORLD CUP
In six seasons he achieved 43 individual podium finishes, 26 of these were victories, 13 in the 2018/19 season. His first World Cup win was 2018 in Ruka (large hill). Won the overall ranking in 2018/19 (Japan's first) and finished third in 2019/20.

FOUR HILLS TOURNAMENT
Participated six times and won the tournament for the first time in 2018/19 winning all four legs. Was the third person in history after Sven Hannawald (GER) in 2001/02 and Kamil Stoch (POL) in 2017/18) to achieve this. In 2021/22 he won the first three legs and the overall ranking.

SEASON 2021/22
Showed up for two events in the Summer Grand Prix 2021, winning one and finishing second in another one. In the winter season, he won seven events, four of them consecutively, finishing second two times. Has been battling Karl Geiger (GER) for the lead in the overall World Cup and is currently ranked second, three points behind Geiger.
