Coach Aleksandr Garanin was recruiting new athletes in September 2002 (after Denis Tishagin retired). He took the children straight from their lessons, led them out into the corridor, drew a line on the floor with chalk, and asked them to jump. Everyone who managed to jump over the mark was invited to the training. Klimov was the only one who was interested in pursuing the sport. "My parents are not connected with sports. My mom is a teacher, my dad is a driver. My coach brought me to the Nordic combined." (skisport.ru, 30 Aug 2018)
At the suggestion of his parents, because he was a stronger ski jumper than a cross-country skier, he eventually left Nordic combined to focus on ski jumping for the 2015/16 season. The transition to doing ski jumping only was quite difficult as he had to change skis to shorter ones, which meant he had to lose a few pounds by adhering to a strict diet in order to pass the control.
