He was an introverted, shy boy who was introduced to sports in order to tear him away from the computer. In 1998 he began to do athletics and in 2001, he tried bobsleigh because his uncle Anatoliy Chelyshev was a coach in the sport (now his personal coach). Won the 2004 Russian Cup in the four-man. But because he was tall, thin, and fast, he was better suited for skeleton and switched sports. (redyarsk.ru, 6 Dec 2006; krsk.kp.ru, 15 Feb 2014)

:

He usually rides the same skeleton for four years but parts start to wear, which can change technique. In 2020, he switched to a skeleton of a new manufacturer, also German, but the company is different. It took longer for him to get used to, but he coped. "The Russian national team last year invited a new specialist to the team - Dirk Machenets. He offered his technique, and it was just time for us to change the skeletons, so we decided to switch to the technique that he recommends. Actually, the results at the European Championships and the World Championships confirm that we did everything right." (olympics.com, 1 Apr 2021)

General Interest

CONTROVERSY
On 22 November 2017, he was disqualified from the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games and had his gold medal stripped from him after being provisionally suspended in 2016 because his drug testing urine sample bottle had scratch marks on it. The ban was overturned on 1 February 2018 as a result of the successful appeal, and his results were restored.

RETIREMENT POST-2026?
After 20 years in the sport, talk of retirement is set for after Cortina d'Ampezzo 2026 Olympic Winter Games. "It is beautiful and symbolic. I made my debut in 2006 at the Olympic Games in Italy - in Turin, and it would be great to finish in 2026 in Cortina d'Ampezzo. I feel that I am full of strength, and I do not think that after the Games in Beijing I will lose strength and interest in sports. I have a lot of energy and I am sure that I can continue performing. Therefore, of course, there are such thoughts." (olympics.com, 1 Apr 2021)

FAMILY
Met his wife Anastasia, a former athlete, in Latvia on the skeleton track in Sigulda. They married in Krasnoyarsk (RUS) and honeymooned in Cuba.
His father Vladimir Alexandrovich, whose life was cut short by an accident, instilled in him a love of sports. (konkurent.krsk.ru)
