RACE AND SPORT
When he first started to race in Sherbrooke, QC, with his brother, they were some of the only skaters of colour in the area. While he believes that is changing now, his parents initially persuaded him not to sign up for hockey for fear he would be racially abused by other players and parents. “When you’re young and you see only white athletes doing a certain sport, you don’t really see yourself doing it. My grandma would tell me stories about (racism in hockey), so they didn’t want me to play hockey. But when you race it’s like track and field. If I go faster than you, if I beat you in a race, I don’t give a **** what you say about me or my colour, I beat your a**." (qcna.qc.ca, 2 Mar 2021)
