"I got to skate with my brother Francois' club at Christmas and on other holidays. It was a lot of fun and I really liked the thrill of the ice. It was like a family event every time we went to the rink. Everyone would pile into the car and it was just about having fun and skating fast and doing the best we could." (cbc.ca, 12 Dec 2009)

General Interest

RETIREMENT
Considered retiring from the sport after the 2017/18 season, but decided to continue competing in order to help develop the next generation of Canadian skaters. "My role as a mentor, as a leader the last few years — I want to take this power and make sure that I complete my job and do everything I can to make short track better in Canada. That's the main reason why I'm continuing. I feel that I can bring the kids to another level by giving examples of what to do in practice and competition, making sure that they're following a path that might help them reach the highest level as fast as they can." (cbc.ca, 15 Mar 2018)

PREVIOUS RELATIONSHIP
Ended a relationship with Canadian short track skater Marianne St-Gelais after 10 years in 2018. The couple were well-known for their kisses by the rink after Olympic events. (cbc.ca, 08 Mar 2018)

LEGACY
Ice Rink Three at the Centre for Culture and Sport Sainte-Julie (CCSSJ) in his hometown of Sainte-Julie was named the Hamelin Rink in honour of him and his brother and father. (olympic.ca, newswire.ca, 25 Oct 2016)

MORE FAMOUS SPORTING RELATIVES

Cousin Michel Goulet (Ice hockey): Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998 after playing 1089 games in the NHL with the Quebec Nordiques and Chicago Blackhawks, and scoring 1153 points (548 goals, 605 assists). Selected to three First All-Star Teams and played in five All-Star Games. Two-time Canada Cup champion and World Championship bronze medallist (1983) with Canada.
