Started in Reston, VA, in 2005. “When I was six, we were driving along and saw a sign saying, ‘Learn to skate'. My father asked me if I wanted to, and I had no idea what it was. But I went along and enjoyed it. At first, I did figure skating, but my coach told me I was going too fast. So I tried speed skating. I’d never heard of that either – but I did know I had that ‘fast switch’ in me." (olympics.com, 1 Mar 2021)
“I never really tried any other sports; I did gymnastics for one day and then went back to the rink. I loved the crazy wildness of short track. I still enjoy the speed, but now I’m trying to master the sport as an art too.” (olympics.com, 1 Mar 2021)
"A medal at Beijing, and hopefully a gold. I really want it. I have experience under my belt, and I like to think I have a good chance. But who knows – it’s short track.” (olympics.com, 1 Mar 2021)

"I think of a very detailed room and it has all the things that make me really feel comfortable. From my favourite food and drink, an animal that I'd want with me to what the colour of the carpet is. And in front of me there's a TV and it's playing a couple of my favourite races. Using that trick really helps me get into that right mind and the right feelings." (sophialiamag.com, 19 Nov 2020)
"Keep smiling." (isu.org)
