Late 2019: Cut his left forearm during practice early in the season when he hit a block going into a corner and skidded out. Needed 24 stitches and still has a three-inch scar.

Started skating in 2008 following his brother and cousins, who were skating at Potomac Speed Skating Club in Maryland. (eu.buckscountycouriertimes.com, 6 May 2021)

:

Initially, he skated off-ice on a pair of rollerblades while his brother was at speed skating training with his cousins, as he was too intimidated by the coach, Korean Olympic gold medallist Kim Dong Sung, and scared to commit to the sport. After many people, including his mother, insisted he try it, he got on the ice. (eu.buckscountycouriertimes.com, 6 May 2021)

"I usually wake up at 7:10, get ready, and eat breakfast. I leave the house at around 8:10 and get to the rink by 8:20. Ice is at 9:15 most days so I warm up until then. Morning ice ends at 11:00 and we usually have off-ice training. By the time we finish everything, it's around noon. After morning training, I either pick up lunch on the way home or if my mum is home, she cooks for me. Some days, I have afternoon practice so I take an hour nap and go back by about 14:30. Afternoon practice ends at about 17:00." (nbcolympics.com, 15 Dec 2021)

Looks at the scar on his left forearm before competing to remind him of what it has taken him to get to that point. “When I returned back to the ice from my accident, I was mentally and physically stronger than ever. My dad told me to look at my scar because it shows the hard work I’ve done to get here. Before a race I’ll look at my scar and it’s a reminder to be strong.” (isu.org, teamusa.org, 13 Dec 2019)

"I skate my best when I'm not thinking about results and just go out and skate." (isu.org)

General Interest

KOREAN ROOTS
Korean was his first language, after his father moved to the USA when he was young and his mother when she was a teenager. However, he began losing the language around the time his brother started going to school. “Then a few years ago I was randomly sitting in a restaurant and started remembering how to read it and what the letters and characters were. Ever since then I’ve been slowly getting better at it. After I started going to international competitions, I made Korean friends and I’ve been talking to them trying to have conversations. I’m pretty good at writing and reading it. Speaking it I’m still a little iffy. I want to get to the point where I can speak and understand it. My mum is happy I’m trying to learn more.” (teamusa.org, 16 Mar 2021)

RELIGIOUS BELIEFS
Finds strength in his Christian beliefs, especially since moving to Utah at age 15 to pursue skating. “I’ve been a Christian my whole life but after moving out here I really got involved with a church community. I’ve just been getting into it ever since I’ve been here, my faith and just trying to strengthen my relationship with God.” He also plans to read the entire Bible over a year, reading it at breakfast every morning. “I just always wanted to do it." (teamusa.org, 16 Mar 2021)

PETS
Has two dogs, Snoopy and Toby, both Malteses. "Snoopy pretty much grew up with me and so I have a special connection with him. He's the 'perfect dog' to me. Toby is actually Snoopy's son and he's a 'momma's boy'." (nbcolympics.com, 15 Dec 2021)
