"When I was around 10 or 11 years old, I went to my first Danubia Series. I got some bad quality blades but at least I got a feeling for what short track is, so I just continued without a really big goal." (isu.org)

:

Wanted to play ice hockey, but initially trained with figure skaters before almost quitting after the local ice rink failed to start an ice hockey team. The next week he met short track coach and Latvian international Evita Krievane.

"We started with two training sessions a week, one ice session with ice hockey skates and one physical training. Some time later, Evita asked us to research short track, so the first two years I didn't really understand much about what I was doing. Evita took me one summer, when I was 12, to Salt Lake City in the United States to train for two months while she was trying to prepare for the 2014 Olympic Games. I was able to join the club at the Utah Oval. I was the youngest and weakest guy there but I improved a lot during that period." (isu.org)

Win medals at the Olympic Winter Games. (isu.org)

:

Trains twice a day for between three and five hours, six days a week. Has seven on-ice sessions, three bike sessions, two gym sessions, and sometimes dry-land training as well. "Of course time at the rink could be way longer because of outside things we have to do, such as blade preparing, which takes a lot of time. During summer training, training usually takes longer because in summer we do the hardest part of the season." (Athlete, 13 Jan 2022)

"The day before races I usually go to sleep really early, at least one hour earlier than usual so my body feels extra rested. I do eat a bit less during competitions. Right before races, I do really heavy warm ups, way longer and harder than daily warm ups. I also have breathing exercises which I do before races, which help me to reduce stress and give me more focus." (Athlete, 13 Jan 2022)

:

"You have to do something bit extra to reach extra results, it could be more focus on food than others, it could be pushing more in training than others; whatever it is, you should be doing bit extra and stay focused as much as possible." (Athlete, 13 Jan 2022)
