Started several sports, like baseball, athletics, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, in his hometown of Kitee, but gradually the other sports fell away and he focused on ski jumping and skiing as he was good in both. At 10, he started regular training in Vuokatti. (perttureponen.fi, Sep 2021)
