Growing up in Oberstdorf, he experienced winter sports early on, starting cross-country and Alpine skiing at a very young age. Chose Nordic combined as his sport and had his World Cup debut at the age of 16. (johannesrydzek.de, Sep 2021)

Milestones

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Finished fifth in the normal hill/10km event in Beijing 2022 and 28th in the large hill/10km race.

Participated at the age of 18 in his first Olympic Winter Games (Vancouver 2010) and won a bronze medal with the team. In Sochi 2014, he won silver with the team and at his third participation in PyeongChang 2018, he won gold with the team and gold in the individual large hill/10km event.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Competed in six World Championships (2011-21), winning 12 medals. In 2017 in Lahti, he won gold in all four events (two team, two individual). Won three gold medals with the team (two in 2017, one in 2015) and three individual gold (two in 2017, one in 2015).

Only in 2013 and in 2021 at his home World Championships in Oberstdorf, did he not finish on the podium.

Between 2009-11, he won five medals at the Junior World Championships, two of them gold.

WORLD CUP
He currently has 17 individual World Cup wins with 2017 being his best season with eight wins. His first World Cup win was in 2011 in Lahti. He has not won a race after his injury in 2019.

2021/22
Finished in the top 10 six times, with one podium result, finishing third in Val die Fiemme (normal hill/10km). Currently ranked 12th in the overall World Cup.
