HOMEMADE SLED TO GOVERNMENT FUNDING

At the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, Mandziy competed on a homemade sled he constructed in his garage, combining his background in mechanics and the lessons he learned from a neighbor, former coach Ludan Valentyn Papirovy and five-time Olympian Natalia Yakushenko.

"For the German national team, they are made by BMW, the Austrian team cooperates with Mercedes, and I make my own sled in the garage."

His comments got the attention of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Ukraine which led to other Ukrainian athletes highlighting chronic underfunding in their own sports. Upon his return from the Games, the government promised Mandziy a new sled, as well as an audit into the allocation of sport funding. He admitted that without this type of concession, he would have retired from luge.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Made his debut in 2011, competing in three World Championships before his first Olympic Winter Games at Sochi 2014.

In 2021, became the first Ukrainian to qualify and compete in the sprint final at the World Championships, where he placed 13th, his top career result.
