First tried luge at age 11 when a family ski trip coincided with a USA Luge Challenge event, designed to introduce kids to the sport. Gordy Sheer (USA), Nagano 1998 doubles Olympic silver medallist and marketing director for USA Luge, noticed her size and competitiveness - she didn't want her siblings to beat her down the track - and invited her to a training camp. "[There has] been a lot of reframing how I go about things for training and not putting the pressure on myself to be so motivated. I think within sport, there’s all of this push like 'Look at athletes, they’re so motivated. They’re so driven. That’s so great, they’re so competitive' and that was always me, but I felt really guilty still being in sport and not feeling that way. I still want to be here, I still want to compete, and I still have all of these goals, but trying to be an athlete without that insane, crazy drive and motivation, I felt guilty. It took me a while to realise that it’s okay if I just enjoy doing this a lot still, and still want to work hard and succeed, but I’m not the same that I was when I was 22." Being part of an all-USA podium at the Lake Placid World Cup in 2015, with Erin Hamlin and Emily Sweeney in the top-two positions. "I’ll never beat that, the only way that could ever be touched is maybe an Olympic medal or something. I’ve won World Cup races since then, I’ve gotten a podium in the overall since then, but that one World Cup can’t be touched. Sharing a podium with teammates is truly the best feeling." General Interest

BROKEN FINGER
After breaking a bone in her middle finger in January 2022, she has been forced to paddle with her knuckles to start races, an old-school method last used in the 1990s. "What an inconvenience that I do the one sport where you repeatedly slam your fingertips into the ground as hard as you can," she said on social media at the time.

At the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, she will use silicon earplugs in her gloves to protect her knuckles and hopes to utilise the steep grade at the start of the Yanqing National Sliding Centre track. “I’m willing to push through any amount of pain, but I’m not willing to put myself in a situation where I’m going to further damage this or create all kinds of bigger problems...I’ve definitely kind of realised that I’ll have this body forever. And even though it’s just a finger, you’d be surprised by how much I can’t do by taking away one little finger.” (Instagram, 14 Jan 2022; yorknewstimes.com, 5 Feb 2022)

SUMMER HATES WINTER
Despite being a winter sports athlete, she does not like the cold weather conditions she often faces in competition. "It's a slowly developed hate over the past eight years, stemming from having gone to tons of cold places and wearing a Spandex suit in negative 20-degree temperatures. All I have to keep me warm is my name." (Info 2018)
