First attempted luge at age six, but was soon injured carrying the sled to a starting point on the local Sigulda track. While he rehabbed his injury, he competed in badminton. "I was 100 per cent sure that I would return to the sled. Yes, badminton fascinated me, but I didn't get those emotions and adrenaline there, so somewhere in my subconscious, the sled called back."
