His aunt, a former luge athlete from the Soviet era, brought him to the sport at age 10, telling him he could be an Olympian one day. "When I came, I thought, 'Oh, now I’ll start racing right away.' But everything turned out to be wrong. I trained for a year. Then the guys went to the first competition, and I got sick. Somehow I was not even very upset. A year later, the coach called me to practise again. And immediately in the summer, we went to Ukraine. From the very first races at the training camp, I understood how to do everything." (sport-express.ru, 14 April 2020; sports24.ru, 2 March 2020)
Compete with his brother Pavel at an Olympic Winter Games. (olympic.ru, 17 Feb 2020)
"It seems to be a trivial element that [all luge teams] train in about the same way. But if you look closely [at the Russian team], you will see a lot of nuances. We have three computers that track every movement: if you unclench your fingers, the gauge jumps, and cameras are filming from all sides. You can say we are working in a laboratory for super soldiers." (bolshoisport.ru, 2018)
"All awards are hard to come by, and it's difficult to say which is the best. I've invested my strength, emotions and health in each victory, so they are all special." (vk.com, 3 May 2020)
"I have no idol. There are only people who are liked for what they have done for the development of sports. They show you how to do it. There are a lot of them. For example, Muhammad Ali (USA), Alexander Karelin (RUS). There is Conor McGregor (IRL). Although he talks a lot, notice how much he raised his sport." (sport24.ru, 2 March 2020)
