As a young child, he was involved in boxing, football and ice hockey, but permanently took up luge, the most popular sport in Bratsk, at age 10 at the local youth sports school. "There were not many choices in my hometown. Of all the sports, luge interested me the most." (rusluge.ru, 2021; championat.com, 3 Feb 2018)

Longtime coach and father figure Eduard Burmistrov (RUS). "He kept asking me to take luge seriously. One day, I listened to his words and began to work hard. I gradually began to succeed and I began to go to various youth competitions. I want to say a huge thank you for the fact that he convinced me many years ago to believe in my strengths."

Also credits his coach's influence for saving him from a life of crime. "Burmistrov always said, 'Don't wander the streets. You better go in for sports. Otherwise, you will be s**t all your life - or worse - you will be thrown into the slammer.' Thanks to him, I did not follow in the footsteps of my friends. In the end, he turned out to be right: even the guys from my old group praise him for getting me out that place. Otherwise, perhaps, I would have suffered the fate of a friend who was almost imprisoned for murder." (nashbratsk.ru, 9 Feb 2014; championat.com, 10 April 2018)

General Interest

OLYMPIC FEUD
Blamed his "subpar" outing at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games on a conflict with former Russian national coach Albert Demchenko (RUS) over which sleighs and equipment to use. Eduard Burmistrov (RUS), his personal coach, was not able to attend the Games, and Pavilchenko placed a disappointing 14th in Singles.

“I don't know why, but Albert wants us to ride his sleigh. And I have no results on them! I say: 'Let's put my old runners on this sleigh, then it will work out faster.' I left him a sleigh, and then I came back and he gives me a completely different sleigh! And I drive slowly the next day. Sorry, but this is just a setup." (rt.com, 11 Feb 2018; fontanka.ru, 11 Feb 2018)

FAMILY
His father abandoned the family at age five, with his mother dying a few years later. Was raised by his grandmother Alla Araufovna with the help of his older sister, Tatiana. Has another sister, Victoria.
