As a young child, he was involved in boxing, football and ice hockey, but permanently took up luge, the most popular sport in Bratsk, at age 10 at the local youth sports school. I gradually began to succeed and I began to go to various youth competitions. I want to say a huge thank you for the fact that he convinced me many years ago to believe in my strengths."

Also credits his coach's influence for saving him from a life of crime. "Burmistrov always said, 'Don't wander the streets. You better go in for sports. Otherwise, you will be s**t all your life - or worse - you will be thrown into the slammer.' Thanks to him, I did not follow in the footsteps of my friends. In the end, he turned out to be right: even the guys from my old group praise him for getting me out that place.
