"I do not have any clearly expressed hobbies. I try to devote all my free time to learning something new. I promised myself some time ago that I won't be worse today than yesterday. I want to learn something new, and if someone tells me something from any sphere that I did not know about, I will be happy." (365news.biz, 26 Feb 2020)

Began luge at age 13 after Evgeny Yazev came to her school looking for new recruits. "I remember my first race very clearly. I remember how my older teammates ran with me along the track, and I squeaked and squealed, shouting how cool it was, and how I don't need lessons at school." (365news.biz, 26 Feb 2020)

"I wanted to try something new and interesting." (rusluge.ru)

First career win and podium finish at the 2020 World Championships in Sochi. "There is little that can compare with the first victory. It was the most important for me, and I could not even resist emotions. At last I am on the podium - and at the highest level." (365news.biz, 26 Feb 2020)

"I live by the principle 'Don't create an idol for yourself'." (rusluge.ru)

Her first and only coach, Evgeny Yazev (RUS). The pair have been together since 2007. "I am very grateful to my coach and for the fact that he changed me so radically in my life. After all, I was generally an unathletic person. At school, I avoided physical education lessons in all possible and impossible ways." (365news.biz, 26 Feb 2020)

CHILDHOOD DREAM
As a child, she wanted to become a mathematics teacher. (rusluge.ru)

HANDY
Enjoys making things with her hands. Displays her creativity through mediums such as sculpting, painting and embroidery. "If I have the time and inspiration, then I am always doing this. When I come home, they tell me that I need to make this picture or create a mosaic. I don't stop until I finish." (365news.biz, 26 Feb 2020)

RELAY FLUB
At the 2020 World Championships, vying for her third world title of the year, Katnikova missed the paddle on her leg of the relay, disqualifying the Russian team and delivering victory to Germany. "It was terrible. This is such a ridiculous mistake in our sport. If you only knew, it gave rise to so many jokes. That is how long my name will live, so much will be remembered both about the two medals in individual races, and about this most annoying and stupid mistake. There was so much joy from the victories and so much despair that at 26 years old, after sliding for so long... I just had to touch two centimeters higher." (sport24.ru, 16 Mar 2020)

Milestones

Double gold medallist at the 2020 World Championships in Sochi, winning the singles title ahead of Julia Taubitz (GER) and the sprint 0.008 seconds ahead of compatriot Tatyana Ivanova (RUS). Became the first female representing the Russian Federation to win a world title, and the first since Vera Zozula (representing the Soviet Union) won in 1978. Her victory in the singles broke a seven-year German streak and was the second non-German victory since 1995 (Germany has won 37 of the last 42 races).

Finished the 2020/21 World Cup season sixth overall in singles, finishing five races in the top 10, including her first World Cup podium in Altenberg and two fourth-place results.

European Junior Championships bronze medallist in singles (2014) and relay (2013). Finished fourth in singles in 2013. Also competed at two World Junior Championships (2012, 2013).
