General Interest

PARTNER
After winning two junior world titles and one World Cup season, Eggert split with partner Marcel Oster to begin competing with Sascha Benecken for the 2010/11 season. The pair found success early, recording three third-place finishes in World Cup races that year, and placed fourth overall in the season standings.

"I like to compare this relationship with a marriage, only that it is even more exhausting, simply because we are on the road for six months at a time, then share a room, our work and, of course, our free time from morning to night. It is probably clear to everyone that there are also points of friction from time to time." (t-wood.de; wintersportmomente-thueringen.de, 2021)

DIFFERENT KIND OF FLYING
Received his ultralight pilot's licence in 2011 and bought his first plane in 2012. Recently, he began stunt flying and works as a flight instructor at a school in Ballenstedt. "I have been enthusiastic about flying for as long as I can remember. Even as a child I told everyone 'I want to be a pilot!' and I followed my heart and made this dream come true." (tonisflugschule.com; bundeswehr-sport-magazin.de, 1 May 2012; fil-luge.org, May 2020)

SLEIGH BUILDER
Is one of the only luge athletes to craft his own sleigh, a task he works on with his father, who owns a carpentry shop in their hometown of Ilsenburg. It's not uncommon to find him in the workshop late at night before race day. "I have one big weakness, I can't lose, [and I have] a penchant for perfectionism, that's why I'm always up to date in the quest to be the best." (brc-ilsenburg.de, 20 Nov 2019; thyssenkrupp-steel.com)

POTENTIAL RETIREMENT
Has previously stated that he will retire after the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. However, after his continued success, he has not ruled out continuing his career post-Olympics. “There are different options, but that will be decided after the end of the season. A victory in Beijing would be a worthy end to a career, but on the other hand, the Luge World Championships in 2023 will take place on our home track in Oberhof. A start is so appealing because we have already become world champions on three of the four German railways, just not in Oberhof yet. And then we could celebrate the end of our careers with our families and our fans. But as I said, nothing has been decided yet.” After his career in luge, he plans to work as an aeroplane mechanic. Milestones

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Two-time Olympic medallist in doubles, winning silver at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games after taking the bronze medal at PyeongChang 2018.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
First luger to win four consecutive World Championship doubles titles (2017-2021), along with partner Sascha Benecken. Surpassed teammates Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt's record of three (2013-2016), after defeating the duo in 2021 (Koenigssee).

Second most successful doubles pairing with eight gold and 15 medals in total, sitting behind Wendl and Arlt with nine and 16 respectively. Also, sit fifth all-time, behind fellow German's Felix Loch (13 gold, 19 total) and Georg Hackl (10 gold, 22 total).

Back-to-back junior doubles world champion with Marcel Oster (2007, 2008), adding a gold and silver medal in the team relay each year respectively.

WORLD CUP
Third most successful doubles pairing with five overall season titles, behind Italians Norbert Huber and Hansjorg Raffl (8) and Germans Patric Leitner and Alexander Resch (6).

Recorded their first World Cup podium in January 2011 during their first season, finishing third in Oberhof. Had their first win 364 days later in Oberhof, qualifying for the team relay, where they won their first relay title by 1.293 seconds.

Went on to win the Oberhof doubles the next two seasons (their only win each season), defeating teammates and rivals Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt on each occasion. After finishing second behind Wendl and Arlt the next three years, they again defeated their rivals in 2018 by 0.007 seconds. With another second to Wendl and Arlt in 2019, they returned to the top of the Oberhof podium in 2021.

The 2017/18 season was their most successful winning 10 of 13 World Cup doubles races and finishing second in another two. Including relays, they only missed the podium once in all competitions that season, after not finishing during the Lillehammer sprint.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Second most successful partnership with five European titles, behind Wendl and Arlt, who also have five titles, but more minor medals. However, the pair have not reached the podium since 2019, after finishing second in the doubles, and last stood atop the podium in 2018 (doubles).
