Brandt's parents, who had been experiencing difficulties conceiving children, adopted her sister Marissa from Korea in 1992. However, just before they received their first picture of Marissa from the adoption agency, Brandt's mother Robin discovered she was pregnant, and Hannah and Marissa were raised together almost as twins.
