Xu's mother is the niece of Anshan Pingshu performance artist Liu Lanfang, who gave Xu Mengtao her name.

Trained as a gymnast from the age of four, being sent away from home at the age of seven to join the Jilin provincial gymnastics team, before returning home to Liaoning a year later to join its provincial gymnastics team in 1998.

Ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) in her right knee when landing during the 2007 National Championships, spending the rest of the season in rehabilitation. She didn't tell her parents about her injury until more than two years later.
First switched to aerials skiing in 2001.
