Grew up near New Zealand's Southern Alps, where his father was a heli-ski guide and avalanche safety instructor, and his mother, a midwife, also skied. Was first on skis at age two as it was a family activity. As he got older, his parents encouraged him and his brother to continue to spend time in the mountains. "Being the younger sibling I've always strived to beat my older brother in all aspects of life. The rivalry I shared with my brother transferred into competitions and I think it's really helped me to become a better competitor." (Info 2018)

At home in the backcountry, but even more so in the park and pipe, he decided to focus on the disciplines of halfpipe and slopestyle. "The creativity and the freedom of expression this sport brings. There is more structure around the sport today than when I first got into it, however, the way you want to ride your skis is entirely up to you as a rider". (snowsports.co.nz; Athlete, May 2021)

General Interest

WINTER / SUMMER OLYMPIAN?
Always wanted to be an Olympian but wasn't always sure it would be in skiing. "I’m really into sport and the Olympics are the pinnacle so I was interested in going for something. Once freeskiing was named as an Olympic sport that became my goal, especially after watching the Sochi Games. The big goal would be to go to both Winter and Summer Olympics." (olympic.org.nz)

COVID-19
Was skiing in Laax, Switzerland when the season was shut down due to the pandemic. "All of a sudden I was on a plane, returning to New Zealand in March for the first time in seven years." (downdays.eu)

GROWING UP WITH TWO WINTER SKI SEASONS
Hasn't seen a New Zealand summer since he was nine years old. Doesn't know if he could hack a whole summer unless he was surfing the whole time. Both his parents are from overseas so he had dual ski seasons growing up when they'd go on family holidays or visit people. "My dad is from Rochester, New York, and my mom is from North Yorkshire in England. They came down to Wanaka a long time ago to be ski bums, ran into each other, and never left. They had two kids, got a mortgage and I guess the rest is history." (downdays.eu)

Milestones

Two-time Winter Youth Olympic Games medallist winning New Zealand's first-ever Games medal with his halfpipe silver in 2016 in Lillehammer (bronze in slopestyle). “I’m just really happy to land on the podium. It’s pretty cool to have medals of two different colours.” (snowsports.co.nz)

At the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, in a space of minutes, he went from 12th to 13th in the qualifying rounds of the slopestyle and did not advance to the finals, with only 0.8 points separating his score from Jonas Hunziker (SUI) in 12th. "I'm absolutely devastated. I would have loved to have made it through to the finals." (snowsports.co.nz)

Competed at three World Championships (2017, 2019, 2011) producing three top-10 finishes, with a best of fifth in 2019 (big air).

Has three top-10 finishes at the Junior World Championships, with fifth being his best in 2014 (halfpipe).
