First tried skiing at age two in Gryon, Switzerland. On 28 November 2006, when ski cross was officially included in the programme for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, her father asked her if she wanted to go to the Olympic Winter Games. At the time there wasn't a Swiss National team, so her father started the process to find sponsors and coaching. By age 16, she left school to pursue a career as a professional athlete. :

Before ski cross, she competed in slopestyle competitions, but that discipline wasn't for her: "It’s a sport that’s judged and I could never do a sport that was judged. I then did my first ski cross and that was truly the sport I was waiting for. You’re never bored, every track is different, no jump is ever the same, you’re always thinking about strategy and technique.” (redbull.com, Mar 2021)

:

The one medal missing from her career is the Olympic gold medal. “That’s the one thing. The goal of every athlete is to win gold. But if I race perfectly and I don’t have a medal or I’m second and third, I will also be glad.” (redbull.com, Mar 2021)

:

On top of her skiing training, she is famous for her parkour training sessions at the gym, where she shows off her balance and reactivity skills with a number of innovative circuit training routines. (Instagram)

Becoming the winningest ski cross athlete of all-time (amongst women and men). By winning the 2021 World Cup in Idre Fjall, she broke Ophelie David's record of 26 World Cup wins. (FIS TV, Dec 2020)

:

Tennis player Roger Federer (SUI), 2008 Olympic doubles champion and 2012 singles silver medallist. "I really like the spirit of Roger Federer. It's not because he's Swiss, it's just because I think it is so incredible how he can be at the top and be so good for a long time and have not so much injury." (cnn.com, 6 Feb 2014)

:

Coach Guillaume Nantermod. (Athlete, 11 Feb 2010)

:

"I come from a family where you go for what you've decided to go for, no compromise." (redbull.com)

:

"Give yourself the means to achieve your dreams." (villars-diablerets.ch)

General Interest

COACH RELATIONSHIP
Had a private coaching team lead by Guillaume Nantermod for a decade (2001 world champion in snowboardcross). In 2018, they mutually terminated their coaching relationship and she entered into the Swiss Ski coaching structure. (fanny-smith.com)

FANNY SMITH ACADEMY
After finishing school in 2009, there was no national ski cross programme to assist her, so with financial support from her sponsors and her father, she set up a ski cross-specific training programme for herself and other promising young skiers. The Fanny Smith Academy was established in 2014. (Info 2018)

GRANDMOTHER "MAMMY BETTY"
Has a very close relationship with her maternal grandmother "Mammy Betty", dedicating her PyeongChang 2018 bronze medal to her. She took her taste for risk and competition from her grandmother. "She's as much a friend as a grandmother. She has always been very present, she gave me a lot of strength. And then I love to listen to her. When someone is able to tell you great stories about your own family, it's wonderful.” (illustre.ch, 3 Apr 2018)

Milestones

In her Olympic Winter Games debut at Vancouver 2010, she was the youngest athlete on the Swiss team at the time, age 17.

Winning the ski cross bronze medal at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games (behind two Canadians), helped to erase the disappointment of not making the final at Sochi 2014, after entering those Games as the reigning world champion. "I managed to relax, I really had to fight, so this bronze medal means a lot to me. It is an accomplishment. In my athletic life, in my personal life, in my Olympic life. It is a goal, a dream too, which has come true." (tdg.ch, 23 Feb 2018)

Five-time World Championship ski cross medallist winning one gold (2013), three silver (2017, 2019, 2021), and one bronze (2015).

2010 Junior World ski cross champion.

At the end of the 2020/21 season, she became the winningest ski cross athlete of all time, with 29 World Cup wins, the most amongst women and men so far. Has 57 podium finishes in 115 World Cup starts.
