First tried skiing at age two in Mount Snow, VT, and began competing at age six. Initially wanted to be an alpine skier, but her two older brothers convinced her to take up freestyle skiing instead. "I even did acroskiing. It's like ballet skiing. You like dance to music basically on snow. And I did it to [the] Little Mermaid [song] 'Under the Sea' when I was six years old." (npr.org, 10 Feb 2014)
Grew up on Long Island, New York, and always wanted to be on the snow, just like her brothers. She would travel with her mother to watch them compete in freestyle skiing and eventually her mother encouraged her to begin competing too. When she knew she was serious about the sport before she even started high school, she moved to Vermont from Long Island (with her family) to ski and train at the prestigious Mount Snow Academy. (npr.org, 10 Feb 2014)
"I like to help mold the young athletes because now I’m the veteran and I have been through this for so long. It’s all about pushing the sport and making it grow." (usskiandsnowboard.org)
Credited her mother as a big reason she has competed in two Olympic Winter Games, calling her “the toughest woman I know." (boston.com)

"I grew up skiing with my brothers and they never let me hit the small side of the jump. I had no option. That's always been my mindset growing up, if boys can do it, I can do it." (Info 2018)
