2009 World Cup in St. Johann (Ski cross - 11th)
March 2021: Injured his knee while racing in the 2021 World Cup in Georgia. In the Big Final, he had his tips clipped by another athlete on the last straight. Missed the remainder of the season returning to training in September 2021.
June 2020: Several rib/collarbone fractures and some damage to his right lung while mountain biking. Was back on skis in September 2020.
February 2010: Broke his leg in training the day before he was due to compete at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Was added to the Canadian team to replace an injured teammate, only to then re-injure himself and be forced to withdraw from the Games. (alpinecanada.org)
In December 2010: Broke his right leg for a third time, which led to two rods being implanted, causing him to miss the 2011 Winter X Games in Aspen, where he was the reigning bronze medallist as part of a Canadian podium sweep in 2010. (olympic.ca)
March 2009: Broke his tibia during a race in La Plagne, France. Became entangled with another competitor off a step-down feature and fell awkwardly. (alpinecanada.org)
2008
Spent a lot of time at Canada Olympic Park (COP) when he was a kid because his mother worked there and would always get goosebumps while watching a Calgary 1988 Olympic Winter Games highlight videos on repeat. First tried skiing at 18 months of age. (olympic.ca)
Saw the success of the Canadian ski cross team and decided to try his luck at the discipline, switching from alpine skiing to freestyle skiing in 2008. Turned down funding and carding from Alpine Canada to pursue ski cross at his own expense (costing $20,000 for the first season), and turned down scholarship offers from universities in the United States of America. The added pressure of being the defending Olympic champion may worry some, but he is taking it in stride, heading into what is likely his final Olympic Winter Games. “I’m seeing it as a unique opportunity. There’s a bit of pressure, but I’m looking at it as a bonus lap.” (fis-ski.com)
