OLYMPIC GAMES
Finished seventh at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
PARTNERSHIP
They teamed up in 2011 after they both had split up with their previous partners and had a try-out on the suggestion of Gilles' former coach Patti Gottwein (USA). Within the first five minutes, they both realised it was something they would like to proceed with. They debuted at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in 2013 (18th). From 2014, they were always in the top-10 at world championships and won their first medal, bronze, in 2021.
"We’re skating partners and there is a general respect between us, but we also have a personal relationship. It’s like a co-worker you’ve had for 20 years - you know a lot about and work well with each other and you both want the same result.” (Gilles, IFS Magazine, June 2019)
MAKING THE WORLD PODIUM
They made the World podium in their eighth appearance in the event (bronze in 2021 in Stockholm). "This is our first time on the Worlds podium and it’s a milestone in our careers. We’re so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish this season." (Poirier, isu.org, 27 Mar 2021)
OLYMPIC AMBITIONS
"We have been pretty open and unapologetic about wanting to be on the podium at the Olympics next season so for us being on the podium at Worlds this season is very encouraging and lets us know we’re on the right track. We’ve really tried this Olympic quad to be the best team we can be and not try to mould ourselves after some ideal that is not us and to embrace who we are as skaters. Every year we’ve done that more and more and so the goal for us for the Olympic season is to be more ourselves, to be a better version of ourselves, to be more Piper and Paul." (Poirier, isu.org, 27 Mar 2021)
COVID-19 CHALLENGES
Their only competition in the 2020/21 season was the World Championships in Stockholm (SWE). "I think for the two of us what this year of Covid has taught us is how much we love to compete. We didn’t have the opportunity to compete at all this season so to have the opportunity to do world championships was extremely exciting. We so missed out throughout the season and that made it hard to know how to train properly and stay motivated because we didn’t have those goalposts to motivate us." (Poirier, isu.org, 27 Mar 2021)
COUPLE NICKNAME
Their couple is nicknamed P2. (Poirier, 18 Aug 2021)
FORMER PARTNERS
Poirier competed with Vanessa Crone (CAN) 2006-11 and won the silver medal at the 2008 World Junior Championships as well as the bronze medal at the 2011 Four Continents Championships with her. They competed at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games (14th).
Gilles competed at the international junior level with former partners Zachary Donohue (USA) and Timothy McKernan (USA).
