July 2020: Concussion suffered when she fell and hit her head while walking on a very hot day in Montreal. Was off the ice in recovery for a month in summer 2020. “It was a really warm day one day during the summer. It was unprecedented heat, humidity. I had woken up dehydrated, hadn’t eaten anything. We went for a walk with the dogs, didn’t realize I was going to be so affected by dehydration and hunger, but then I got really lightheaded and passed out on my way into the apartment.” (olympic.nbcsports.com, 15 Jan 2021)

August 2017: Chipped bone fragments in her right ankle, the result of a training accident. Made it through the season despite the pain caused by bone chips floating around in the joint. Underwent surgery in April 2018 to remove the fragments and returned to competition in January 2019. (isu.org)

COUPLE OFF THE ICE
She and Bates started dating a while after teaming up on the ice. "We are so much closer and we know how to help each other in every situation and we can bring each other up and grow, not only ourselves but we can grow together on and off the ice." (isu.org)

CONCUSSION PROTOCOL ADVOCATE
Suffered her first-ever concussion when she fainted on a very hot day in Montreal in July 2020, and hit her head on the stairs she was walking up.
With Bates, they have increased their own knowledge on the subject matter and hopes to do so for others in a sport especially on the importance of recovery. (olympic.nbcsports.com, 15 Jan 2021)
