General Interest

FIRST OLYMPIC EXPERIENCE
Qualified for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games by placing third at the 2018 U.S. National Championship. "There were five men in the U.S. who were competing for three spots. I think I was probably the least likely because I had a small body of work in my first year as a senior internationally and my components wouldn't go up immediately. So I had to push my technical content very hard and I started to try to do all these quads. It was really, really difficult. But when I succeed at the Olympics, it felt really good." (Athlete, 25 Sep 2021)

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SHOCK
Failed to qualify for the final free skating at the 2021 World Championships after a poor short programme, when he ranked 25th. As a result, Team USA needed to send a skater to the Olympic qualifying competition to secure the third quota spot. Zhou went and got the spot. "I handled last year's Worlds actually pretty well. Immediately I just started analysing and thinking what went wrong. We considered all the possibilities, everything, and we came up with a couple of action steps to take that would help prevent that from happening again and help me have a much smoother season for the Olympics." (Athlete, 25 Sep 2021)

SACRIFICES
His mother quit her job to be able to commute with him to Riverside, CA, and stay with him there during the week when he was younger. (govincentzhou.com)

CHINESE HERITAGE
His parents are Chinese immigrants from Beijing. His Chinese name is Zhou Qifang. He speaks Mandarin and attended Chinese school every Saturday until he was 12. (cosmopolitan.com, 5 Jan 2018)

It’s also an honour at this competition to win the gold medal.” (olympics.nbcsports.com, 24 Oct 2021)
