Plans to attend medical school. Will most likely take a break from skating after the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games to finish his education. He took a leave of absence in spring 2020 for two years to focus on his skating career.
Parents Zhidong Chen (medical research scientist) and Hetty Wang (medical translator) immigrated to the United States from China in 1988. Four older siblings (Alice, Janice, Tony, Colin).

Gymnastics: Competed for seven years (state and regional level) and trained in ballet with Ballet West Academy.
2016 CS Finlandia Trophy, (Single skating - 1st)
January 2016: Avulsion injury in his hip in a skating exhibition, hours after winning the bronze medal at the national championships. Required surgery and left him off the ice for six months, missing the junior and senior world championships. (usatoday.com, 28 Jan 2016)
