General Interest

People's Republic of China made its debut in mixed doubles at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. The pairing of Wang Rui – now with the women’s four-player team in Beijing – and Ba Dexin delivered a 4-3 round-robin record and lost a tiebreaker to Norway. They were elevated from a fifth-place finish to fourth when the Olympic Athletes of Russia (OAR) were disqualified.

In 13 World Championship appearances, China has won three medals in the mixed doubles discipline – bronze in 2010, silver in 2016 and bronze in 2017, the latter two won by Wang and Ba. In 2021, Yang Ying and Ling Zhi finished ninth at 4-5 but managed to score an 8-6 victory over Switzerland.

At the Chinese Olympic Trials held in late December 2021, five mixed doubles teams participated with the athlete partnerships changing with each draw. Results and performance markers (“personal success ratings”) were considered, along with as well as past competition records and data, in the final team selection.

Ling Zhi was selected along with newcomer Fan Souyu, who will make her international debut on home ice in Beijing.

China qualified for Beijing as host nation.
