Team Fujisawa

General Interest

When Great Britain’s Eve Muirhead missed a tricky shot for bronze in PyeongChang, Japan’s love affair with their national women’s team – already popular since 2006 – shot to new levels. The country’s first Olympic curling medal stands far above two previous fifth-place finishes (1998, 2014), seventh (2006) and eighth (2010).

At World Championships, Japan has struggled with one podium finish – a silver – in 2016. Satsuki Fujisawa, the 2018 Olympic bronze medallist, lost that final to Switzerland and hasn’t made it back to the World Championships since.

A surprisingly strong World Curling Tour team in recent years, Team Fujisawa is a solid 28-12 this season, scoring an average 8.18 points per game versus an average of 5.91 points against. They came from behind to capture the Japanese Olympic Trials, finished first and second at two tour events in Canada, and claimed their berth in Beijing by winning the second of three spots at the Olympic Qualification Event in Leeuwarden.

In head-to-head matchups against the Beijing field, Team Fujisawa are a career 41-61, but improve to 23-26 over the past four seasons. In the current Olympic cycle they are 5-4 against Canada, 3-1 versus the USA, 3-0 against Korea, and 6-4 versus Great Britain. On the downside, they’ve lost their last eight matches to Sweden and are 1-5 against ROC.

World Ranking: 7th (47.099 pts)
