Biographical Information

Highlights

Athlete:

Winning consecutive gold medals at the 2014 and 2015 world championships for Sweden – the latter was the second of Niklas Edin’s five career titles – as well as 2014 and 2015 European Championships gold.

Coach.:

Winning 2021 European gold and the first of three available Olympic berths at the 2021 Olympic Qualification Event.

Based in Stirling, Scotland in his role as Performance Coach with British Curling.

SQUAD SYSTEM
After the women’s team failed to qualify GBR for the Olympics at the 2021 World Championship, a squad system involving nine athletes was implemented to select the final lineup. Various lineups were used during competitions from August through November. “It was either that or we do the same thing with the same setup and hope for a better result, but we (wouldn’t have) done everything we can. It felt wrong to do the same thing knowing what the last result was. It was in agreement with all the players as well, that they wanted to step it up a bit and feel that pressure.” (Coach, 21 December 2021)

END OF ONE CAREER
A shoulder injury suffered during the 2015-16 season ended his playing career. Too many cortisone injections masked the pain and the damage, requiring surgery. “My biceps were torn off, my shoulder torn off at the ligaments. I will never get the mobility back in the shoulder.” (Coach, 21 December 2021)
