Golf: Accomplished golfer with a scratch handicap. “A lot has been written about me turning down scholarships in America but I definitely don’t regret it. I’ve never stood on a putting green and practised in my life. Who knows how far I would have gone if I had totally dedicated myself to it but you look at how few make it to the top in professional golf and leaving home, my family and curling behind wasn’t for me.” (thecourier.co.uk, 22 Apr 2020)

:

2007 European Mixed Championship in Madrid vs. Norway (6-3 Loss)
2008 European Championships in Ornskoldsvik vs. Netherlands (10-3 Win)

Early 2018: Underwent hip surgery following the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. “I was in a lot of pain the last three or four years. Every time I went on the ice, deep down I was going through a lot. I put my body through that to be able to compete at PyeongChang.” (bbc.com, 17 Sept 2018)

Early 2014: Diagnosed with coeliac disease shortly before the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games after months of illness, weight loss and extreme fatigue. “I’ll never know if being ill while training for the Olympics had any impact on how well we did. I thought I was the best I could be at the time but I’ll never truly know how it affected me. But I think, having been through all this, I am stronger — both mentally and physically.” (dailyrecord.co.uk, 6 Dec 2015)

:

Started at Dunkeld CC at age nine, introduced by her father. “Mum and dad refused to pay hundreds of pounds for curling shoes that I’d grow out of. I can remember super-gluing a milk carton on to the bottom of a pair of trainers. An old pair of my granny’s were my first real curling shoes.” (thecourier.co.uk, 22 April 2020)

:

“I think I realised I had a good opportunity in curling. I grew up watching my dad, and watching videos of games, and I just became hooked from there.” (Athlete, 6 Jan 2022).

:

“I do feel like I’ve got a little bit of unfinished business to do at the Olympic Games. In PyeongChang, I was absolutely devastated. When you have a shot to win a medal, and miss it, it’s extremely hard to take. And I think that’s what’s made me even more eager to go for Beijing and to really put in the hours now and work as hard as I can to be even better.” (worldcurling.org, 23 Feb 2021)

:

Two on-ice sessions per day plus five gym sessions per week, at the National Training Centre in Stirling. Practice games are also utilised.

:

Winning bronze at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

“You need to enjoy your sport, and not be pushed to do something you don’t want to do. Don’t force it.” (Athlete, 6 Jan 2022).

General Interest

PYEONGCHANG FAMILY
Her two brothers also represented Great Britain at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, losing a men’s tiebreaker. “None of us got a medal but nothing can take away from the fact that three siblings were at an Olympics. That won’t happen very often.” (thecourier.co.uk, 22 Apr 2020)

JOURNALIST
Writes a weekly column for Scotland’s The Courier (since 2014). After her team qualified Great Britain for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, she wrote of “pizza, champagne and tears” that were flowing. “This has been such a tough year for everybody and for us as a team, you couldn’t write our story. We might not have been a team for long but we’ve got grit and determination. And the big advantage of coming through this way is that you can’t have any more pressure than we’ve just come through. This has been the most pressure I’ve experienced.” (thecourier.co.uk, 17 Dec 2021)

SQUAD SYSTEM
After her team failed to qualify Great Britain for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games at the 2021 World Championship in Calgary, a squad system involving nine athletes was implemented to select the final lineup. Various lineups were used during competitions from August through November, and the final selection won both the European Championships and the Olympic Qualification Event. “It was a very different system to what I was used to in the past. But if you look at the results, at how the teams did throughout the squad system, it definitely shows that it was a massive success and the right thing to do.” (Athlete, 6 Jan 2022)

CURLING FUTURE
“For Beijing, I just seem to have this bug. I will do everything I can to go back. I want to carry on until I know I can’t win anymore. I will find it very, very hard to step away from curling. I’ve had so much from the support of curling from the World Curling Federation and British Curling, that I am really wanting to give back to the sport.” (worldcurling.org, 23 Feb 2021)
