Father Hanspeter Furger (Cross-country skiing): Bronze medallist in the 3x10km relay at the 1984 Junior World Championships in Trondheim, 1987 Swiss Nordic relay champion, six-times Urner Championships winner (1983-85, 1988-89, 1991).
Brother Michael Furger (Cross-country skiing): Internationally, he competed in one junior event in Campra (2004) and in two FIS events (2005, 2008).

Initially participated in football before switching to cross-country skiing because of the family influence. "Even as a little boy, I was enthusiastic about sports. I had to be on the move always and everywhere. Exercise was very important to my family and I always wanted to emulate my older brother, Michael." (romanfurger.ch)
Took part in a cross-country skiing beginner course at age 12 and was immediately passionate. "My family were involved in skiing, especially my father, who I followed into the sport. Plus I wanted to do what my brother did." (romanfurger.ch)
