General Interest

LIVING IN NORWAY
Moved to Trondheim, Norway in 2010 and now splits most years between two countries, returning to his parents’ house in Aberdeenshire for the summers to roller ski on the roads, do gym work and run, and then heads back to Norway for the winters. Races for a Norwegian club and is treated like one of the locals. “I’ve been living there for 10 years and they’ve accepted me now as an honorary Norwegian skier." (heraldscotland.com, 20 Dec 2020)

HEART CONDITION
Had to pull out of the men's team sprint at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games due to problems with a pre-existing heart condition, having been diagnosed with tachycardia at age 15 (which causes episodes of accelerated heartbeat and palpitations). "It happens two races a year. Every now and then you have to stop. I don't really like using it as an excuse. It's not an excuse; it just happens." (dailymail.co.uk, 19 Feb 2014)

Milestones

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
A veteran of three Olympic Winter Games by the time he was 26, making his debut at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. "Vancouver was fantastic, I was 18 and I was there to get experience, to soak up the whole thing. I’d just left school and took a year out to try and managed to make the Olympics. In 2014, I was making the transition from being a plucky amateur to someone who could compete on the big stage, and I got some quite respectable results in Sochi. I tried to make some changes to my training to make a step forward for PyeongChang but things didn’t go well. I underperformed and had a pretty terrible Games." (teamgb.com)

WORLD CUP FIRST FOR BRITAIN
In 2015, he achieved Britain's first-ever World Cup podium in a sprint event, finishing third in the freestyle sprint at Toblach.
In 2020/21, he had his best season start ever, with his first World Cup podium finish in five years at Davos, finishing third in the sprint. (britishnordic.org, Jun 2021)

FROM SPRINT TO DISTANCE
A consistent sprinter, in 2019 in Davos, he achieved his first-ever World Cup top-10 in a distance event (eighth in 15km free).
