Fishing and ski touring at the end of the competition season. “I can’t wait to get out my powder skis and skins, find my tent and drive to find the powder. Norway is one of the best places in the world for backcountry skiing. I’d be mad not to make the most of it.” (telegraph.co.uk, 4 Feb 2008)

First put on skis as a toddler in the Alps, but when the family moved to Alaska at age five, he started alpine skiing, switching to cross-country and snowboarding after a couple of years. At age 11, while living in Aberdeenshire (Scotland), he began to focus solely on cross-country skiing. (telegraph.co.uk, 4 Feb 2008)

:

Began skiing because his older brother was competing when they lived in Alaska. Wanting to make friends after moving to Aberdeenshire (Scotland), he joined the Huntly Nordic and Outdoor Centre (one of two Nordic clubs in the whole country). “There was a little group of us, Andrew Young, Callum Smith and Alex Standen. At first, we just skied for fun, but soon we started to take it seriously and so some proper training.” (telegraph.co.uk, 4 Feb 2018)

WELCOME BREAK
Had a poor 2019/20 season due to an attempt to try and lose weight, and was happy the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, so he could spend the offseason regrouping. “I realised that it did not work, that there was no point in losing weight anymore. It is the total that matters. Quality of training, body – everything is important. You need to focus on all the areas.” (time24.news, 29 Nov 2020)

MOVING TO NORWAY
With no British national team, he moved to Norway in 2009 to train with a specialist ski gymnasium in Hovden, living in a house with 10 other skiers, and learning Norwegian quite quickly. “I picked up the swear words and the ski words first.” (independent.co.uk, 4 Feb 2018)

INTERNATIONAL FAMILY
Due to his father’s career in the oil industry, the Musgrave family moved all over the world. His sister Heather was born in Norway, sister Posy was born in Cairo, and he and his brother Ben, were born in Poole, Dorset (GBR).

Milestones

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Finishing seventh in skiathlon at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games was the best performance by a British cross-country skier. With 5km left in the 30km race, he had moved into second place. “It’s a decent result but I’m not at the Olympics to come seventh. I’m here to fight for a win.”

At Sochi 2014, his 28th in the sprint was the best British Olympic cross-country skiing performance at the time, and despite having beaten the Olympic champion (Ola Vigen Hattestad) weeks before at the Norwegian national championships, he said he skied like a “tranquillized badger.” Fell ill the night before the 50km mass start finale as he finished 53rd. “I got to the finish and that is all I could expect. It has been a pretty rubbish Games. The sprint is the biggest disappointment.” (bbc.com, 11 Feb 2018; pressandjournal.co.uk, 24 Feb 2014)

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Finished fourth in the 50km skate at the 2015 World Championships in Lahti, missing the podium by 1.5 seconds and only 2.9 seconds behind the gold medallist. Great Britain has never won a medal at the World Championships.

Competed at three U23 World Championships, with three top-10 finishes - fourth (2013 skiathlon), sixth (2011 15km), and ninth (2012 sprint). Competed at two Junior World Championships (2008-09) with one top-10 finish of ninth in the 10km freestyle in 2009.
