November 2020: Had the Covid-19 virus, which caused her to miss the first half of the season. Issues continued as she struggled with back pain after recovering from Covid-19 and then from stomach troubles at the 2021 World Championships.

Her grandfather took her to a training with IFK Tarendo when she was seven years and she found it exciting to do something on her own, without her parents. (Athlete, Oct 2021)

Cross-country skiing is a sport that appealed to her straight away and under her coach Sven Winsa she learned to ski while focusing on enjoying it. "Before that I played basketball because all my friends did, but I knew there and then that I was going to be a skier at age nine." (Info 2018)

General Interest

PARTIALLY FINNISH
Is of Tornedalian Finnish descent. The Tornedalians are descendants of Finns who, at some point, settled in the areas of today's Northern Sweden near the Torne Valley district and west from there. Her mother Lena grew up speaking Meankieli which is considered one of the five minority languages in Sweden and is a dialect of Finnish.

INSPIRATION TO GET ACTIVE
In summer 2017, published a book called "Charlotte Kalla – Styrka, teknik & pannben" to provide tips and tricks to inspire others to lead a healthy life. In summer 2020, she published a series of three films to encourage youngsters to get active in the woods. (Bonnier, Aug 2017; skogeniskolan.se)

HONORARY DOCTORATE
Received an honorary doctorate degree from the Lulea Technical University in November 2020, in recognition of her achievements in sport. Lulea is located in the same region as the ski high school she attended in Gallivare. (www.ltu.se, Nov 2020)

BACK IN THE NATIONAL TEAM
Trained outside the national team in preparation for the 2017/18 and 2016/17 seasons but returned when her personal coach Magnus Ingesson also returned to work for the team after the 2018 Olympic season. (aftonbladet.se, Apr 2018)

Milestones

The first Swedish woman to win gold in cross-country skiing in both the Olympic Winter Games and the world championships. Along with fellow cross-country skier Sixten Jernberg, Sweden's most decorated Winter Olympian, and the most successful female Olympian of all time.

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Three-time Olympic champion (2010, 2014, 2018) and six-time silver medallist. Has won multiple medals at all Games she has participated in. She has won two of her three golds and one of her six silvers on the very same day, 15 February, at four-year intervals.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Winner of one individual gold medal at the home World Championships in Falun 2015, and two relay gold medals at Oslo 2011 and Seefeld 2019, respectively. In addition, has won six silver medals and four bronze medals.

JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Three-time gold medallist at the 2006 and 2007 Junior World Championships in Kranj and Tarvisio, where she also won three silver and one bronze medal.

WORLD CUP
Scored her first World Cup victory during the Tour de Ski 2007/08 which she won and which became her international breakthrough. Has collected a total of 12 World Cup victories and 59 podium finishes during her career thus far.
