The family lived in the village of Podyvot’ye, located in the Sevsky district of the Bryansk region, near the border of Russia and Ukraine. Due to the bad road conditions around his home village of 500 inhabitants, it was not possible to access the village by car, so he was forced to move by foot or by ski. But cross-country skiing was also a fun family activity. His father used his tractor to cut his own ski trails and brought him to local races. By his father's account, one of his goals for Alexander's life was to make him a great skier. “My dad began to train me, after which we decided to run a competition, where I won and I had a great desire to become the best and achieve great goals.”
In 2011, at age 14, his parents enrolled him in the ski academy in Bryansk, 165km to the north of his village. There he would work with coach Nikolai Nekhritov, the first-team coach of the academy. (fasterskier.com, 26 Feb 2021; xc-ski.de, 14 Jul 2021)
In ninth grade, he had to make a choice to either pursue the life of a ski racer or an education for a professional career. When he learned that the 2014 Olympic Winter Games would be held in Sochi, he dreamed of representing Russia on home snow. Even though he would have been only 17 years of age during the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, he judged it was enough time to get to an Olympic level. (fasterskier.com, 26 Feb 2021)
