2017: After years of back pain, he was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a type of arthritis in which there is long-term inflammation of the joints of the spine. Able to continue his career thanks to well-functioning medication but missed the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games among other highlight events. (xc-ski.de)

From when he was little, his parents would take him and his sister Brit skiing around the peaks around Voss. Began training through his friends in Voss. (Athlete, Jan 2022; aftenposten.no, Feb 2019)

Was a keen skier who liked to train but not very successful in races as a youngster, until a breakthrough in a national youth competition in 2004. Winning the national championships for U20 a few years later opened the door for him to join the junior national team. (aftenposten.no, Feb 2019)

Milestones

Made his Olympic Winter Games debut at Sochi 2014, where he finished 19th in the sprint.

Five-time medallist at six World Championships since his debut at Oslo 2011, with three gold (2019 skiathlon, 2013 and 2019 relay) and two bronze (2013 skiathlon, 2019 50km free).

2007 Junior World Championships 20km pursuit silver medallist (fourth in 10km free).

At the U23 World Championships, only competed at Hinterzarten 2010, where finished 17th in the 15km classic.

Has earned six individual World Cup wins and seven relay victories, and had a total of 26 individual World Cup podium appearances. Finished third in the overall World Cup in 2019, and second in the distance World Cup season rankings both in 2019 and 2020. Recorded his first individual podium in Canmore in 2012 and his first individual World Cup victory in the famous 50km race on Holmenkollen, Oslo, in 2015.
