Started skiing around the age of five because his older brother used to race in cross-country skiing and the family spent winter weekends at races, so he followed in his brother's footsteps. However, he grew up playing many sports, such as ice hockey with friends from the neighbourhood. (seura.fi, Feb 2021)
Football: Played until the age of 16, but following good results in national youth cross-country skiing championships (top-five), chose to concentrate on cross-country skiing and moved to Vuokatti Sport institute in Sotkamo (FIN) to attend a ski high school, where the training conditions are at a high level and the snow season is longer than in his home region.
