“I think I was self-aware enough to know that I didn’t have Olympic-level talent in sprinting, but bobsledding seemed to be a good fit for my physical skillset. Aiming for a World Championships medal or an Olympic medal is not something that a lot of individuals get the opportunity to do." (obj.ca, 2 Dec 2021)

Was out of shape in December 2020 and needed some motivation, but he found working from home was just what he needed. “I almost hate to say it out loud, but COVID, in some way, has actually been somewhat conducive to training. I wasn’t meeting clients on a daily basis, I wasn’t wearing a suit and tie every day, so it was easier to get a workout done at lunch hour or during the early-morning hour before setting up shop. His father. "There is this cultural pressure that tells us to get a job, buy a house and settle down. As a former athlete himself, he understands that there is no need to rush. He always says to enjoy life while you are young and have the most ability to enjoy it. I think I would have retired from sport long ago if it wasn’t for him." (canadianathletesnow.ca)

General Interest

COMEBACK
Chris Spring was the catalyst for his return to action. As the director of mergers and acquisitions with Welch Capital Partners, he has returned from an eight-year break for "one more shot" in the four-man bobsleigh competition. The last time he touched a sled was at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. He credits his employer for allowing him to follow his dream of competing in the Olympics for a second time. “I don’t think I would be here if it wasn’t for Welch...Just to get another opportunity to win a medal and show the world what we got would be great, and even more so after spending the past seven or eight years sitting in an office. It would be a great story to tell the grandchildren.” (obj.ca, 2 Dec 2021)

CLOSE TO THE SPORT
During his nearly eight-year absence from the national team bobsleigh program, he remained connected to the sport in other ways. Since 2013, he has sat on the Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton board of directors as the bobsleigh athlete representative. If a World Cup race came to Lake Placid, he’d make the road trip and during the World Cup season, he’d get up early on the weekends to watch the live races on YouTube. (ottawasportspages.ca,, 10 Nov 2021)

FINANCIAL MARKETS
Has a passion for business and enjoys following the financial markets and trade equities. His family includes a couple of CEOs of major corporations and he sees that what they’ve done to be successful in business is similar to what he’s done to be successful in sport. (olympic.ca)

Milestones

Made his Olympic Winter Games debut at Sochi 2014 in the four-man (with pilot Justin Kripps). Was originally scheduled to compete with Chris Spring, but there was a late reorganization of the crews to put the team’s top pushers into a sled with Justin Kripps, who had proven to be the best Canadian driver on the Sochi track. Sitting eighth after the first heat, the sled overturned on turn 12 in the second heat. He suffered a mild concussion and was not medically cleared to compete in the final two heats.

An alternate to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games team.

Two-time World Championships bronze medallist in the team competition (2011, 2013). Pushed Lyndon Rush to a sixth-place finish at the 2011 World Championships.

First World Cup podium finish was third in four-man in 2010 (Park City), and first victory was in 2011 in team competition (Innsbruck).
