Was first intrigued by the sport when watching brakewoman Shelly-Anne Brown (CAN), who is black, win the silver medal in the two-woman with pilot Helen Upperton at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Attended a testing camp at her university in the summer of 2011 and completed her pilot's training after the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. "I don't know if I would be where I'm at right now if I hadn't seen someone like me in Shelly-Anne Brown at the Vancouver Winter Games." (bobsleighcanadaskeleton.com; tsn.ca, 10 Jan 2022)

"Despite the many medals I won throughout my collegiate career at York University, I felt like something was missing. I got to a point where I wasn’t enjoying sport for what it was anymore. I had hit a rut (one of many) and my go-to mantra wasn’t helping me overcome my mental block. I knew that making it to the Olympic Summer Games wasn’t in the cards for me. I needed a change and that change came in the form of bobsleigh, which presented new challenges." (olympic.ca, 8 Jan 2021)

:

"I still want to be the best my sport has ever seen (and I fully believe I am capable of that), but I really want to be a representation of what Black athletes can do. I want to be a visual representation for children and youth, especially Black youth, that we belong in all sports, including winter ones." (olympic.ca, 8 Jan 2021)

Her third-place finish in the two-woman with pilot Alysia Rissling at the 2017 World Cup in PyeongChang. "No one would have thought Rizz and I would be the top Canadians, let alone medal on that track." (slidingonice.com, 14 Jun 2021)

General Interest

FIRST CAREER RACE
With 24 hours' notice, was called up by Bobsleigh Canada to get to Lake Placid from Toronto to serve as brakewoman for Julia Corrente, so that Canada could compete at an Olympic qualifying event for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. It was the first time she had slid from the top of the track.

SWITCHING TO MONOBOB
Started as a brakewomen for Kallie Humphries and Alysia Rissling in her first season. After a demotion and being named as an alternate on the Canadian Olympic team for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, she almost retired from the sport. "My dream had been taken away from me and there weren’t enough encouraging words or positive thoughts to take me out of the dark space that had been created. At that point, I decided that it was time to put an end to chasing my Olympic dreams. I couldn’t cut it in making it for the Summer Games and now was close enough to kiss the Winter Games and still couldn’t make it." Instead, she took control of her Olympic dream, and went to pilot school in Lake Placid. In her World Cup pilot debut in January 2020, she finished 19th in the two-woman in Innsbruck.

“With Beijing 2022 coming up, we’ve got a new track, a new sport. Being part of a new event, getting introduced to the Olympic Games, is such an opportunity. And the opportunity for women to have another medal to go for in bobsleigh is so exciting.” (olympic.org, 23 Feb 2020; cbc.ca, 12 Nov 2020; olympic.ca, 8 Jan 2021)

CHILDHOOD
As the daughter of Ghanaian immigrants who grew up in community housing, Appiah and her family bonded over watching Jeopardy each evening, a tradition that has led to a lifelong love of trivia. "It would get cut-throat. I'm not going to lie. Sometimes I jump the gun and I answer the question before it's been fully read by the host and my sisters or my brother will get furious with me."

Participating in winter sports, at that time, was not possible. “Growing up in a low-income family, you know, skiing, snowboarding, even hockey were not really available to us just because of the cost." (cbc.ca, 4 Jan 2022; wellandtribune.ca, 5 Feb 2021)
