Was drawn to the sport as it was a mix of athletics and race car driving. Quickly discovered the sport was a fun and unique challenge that he was willing to pursue a career in. "Everything matters in bobsleigh, and it’s all to maximize the speed. To go fast, you have to race on the edge and it makes it a very exciting sport to compete in." General Interest

EARLY LIFE
Both his parents were aid workers for UNICEF, so he split his childhood between a small village in Hawaii, USA, and Summerland, British Columbia. He also spent time living in Thailand, Cambodia and Australia. It wasn't until he was in high school, living in Canada permanently to attend high school, that he even saw snow. With all his travels, he has citizenship from the United States of America, Canada and Australia. (Info 2018; manifestosport.com, 2021; rbc.com, 2017)

CARBON NEUTRAL
In an effort to be environmentally friendly, he calculated that he needed to plant 130 pine trees to offset the carbon he generates travelling to compete. His family has now planted more than 1,000 trees, from a variety of species, on their property in Canada. "I'm by no means an environmental activist, and this is not even close to an exact science. I'm just happy to quietly do my part in hopes that generations down the road will be able to experience the natural beauty we've grown up in." (Info 2018)

TRIUMPH AFTER TRAGEDY
One week before his Olympic victory at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, he received the news that his 94-year-old grandmother had died. The athlete kept this to himself until after the two-man final, when he revealed that prior to her death, she had a feeling about the event. "She picked me to win gold in the two-man, so she was still pretty sharp in her final days. I was really happy we could get it done in her honour." Milestones

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
In the two-man event at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, he and brakeman Alex Kopacz tied with Germans Francesco Friedrich and Thorsten Margis for first in 3:16.86, the second-ever tie for gold in the sport. Canada's only other mens' gold medal was in 1998, with Pierre Lueders (his mentor and former four-man teammate) and David MacEachern locked in another tie with Italians Guenther Huber and Antonio Tartaglia, almost exactly 20 years prior.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
In 2019 in Whistler, BC, he won both a silver medal in the two-man and bronze in the four-man.

WORLD CUP
Won the overall title in the two-man in the 2017/18 season, finishing on the podium in five of the eight events - while finishing no lower than fourth in any race. With two podium appearances in the four-man that season, also won the combined rankings.

Has recorded 11 World Cup podium appearances at Lake Placid, including three golds in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons.
