February 2014: Herniated a disc in his neck three weeks before the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Recovered in time to compete, placing 23rd in the two-man and 25th in the four-man.

2012: Broke his ankle and sustained a herniated disc in his neck that required five months of rehabilitation.

General Interest

IMPAIRMENT
Was born with a hearing impairment. In 2007, he was able to hear for the first time after he received an artificial cochlear implant for his right ear. In 2010, he received an implant for his left ear. "I didn't even know there was a wind noise, and the sound of a car's bang and the squeak' of a window are noises to people, but to me, I was very surprised, there is a sound like this."

Milestones

In the four-man at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, he was part of Won Yun-Jong's sled that tied for the silver medal with the German team piloted by Nico Walther. It is the only silver-medal draw in Olympic history, and only the second tie in the four-man after France and Great Britain both won bronze medals at the Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games.

The Olympic Winter Games silver medal at PyeongChang 2018 is the first medal won by Korea - or any Asian nation - in the sport.

At the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Kim was part of the first sled (with pilot Gang Gwang-Bae) to represent the Republic of Korea at an Olympic Winter Games.
