2021 World Cup in Innsbruck (Two-woman - 4th)
Prior to 2020: Chronic patellar tendon inflammation hampered her running career. Took six months off of running when it was announced that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were postponed to rehabilitate. She has also suffered from hip and feet issues in her career.
Bobsleigh coach Stephan Bosch, who has known Burghardt for years, encouraged her to try the sport in 2021. She had previously turned down requests to test as a brakewoman. (rbb24.de, 15 Dec 2021; sportschau.de, 24 Nov 2021)
"It was simply the Olympic Games themselves, which were very emotional and positive for me in the summer, and to experience that again." (rbb24.de, 15 Dec 2021)
“If there's one thing I've learned in bobsleigh over the last few months, it's that anything can happen - from first place to last place. Even small mistakes can be unforgivable. Therefore, the focus is not on setting an ambitious goal. We will continue to give everything in training, perfect the process at the start, Mariama can drive, and then it will be fine.” (leichtathletik.de, 19 Jan 2022)
After suffering from a string of minor injuries in athletics, took up CrossFit and underwent medicinal leech therapy to minimise her pain in late 2019. She also started working with a sport psychologist. (sueddeutsche.de, 23 Jun 2021)
