As a child, he tried out nearly every winter sport: Alpine skiing, biathlon, Nordic combined, ice hockey. Was first introduced to bobsleigh as a child by his father and uncle - he attended every race at the nearby track at Koenigssee - but didn't start training until 2011 when he took a beginners' course while studying at university. "At first I took up bobsleigh only as a physical activity to balance my studies. I began training with a club in Berchtesgaden, and was soon integrated into the junior national team because of my performances."

He took over as a pilot full-time in 2015. "I said to myself, 'being that brakeman, that's kind of stupid, I'd rather drive myself.'" (sporthilfe.de, 25 Oct 2017; Info 2018; ktsa.de, 27 Feb 2015)

"I've always been a sports fanatic and an adrenaline junkie." (ispo.com, 17 Jan 2018)

To win an Olympic gold medal. “Since my uncle Rudi came second in Albertville in 1992, I have to win gold, of course, otherwise I have to listen to it all my life." (sporthilfe.de, 25 Oct 2017)

As part of his weight training, he performs single-leg squats with a 100-kilogram load and follows that up with 10m of walking lunges. Completes box jumps up to 1.6m high. (stuttgarter-zeitung.de, 30 Dec. 2018)

Milestones

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Beijing 2022 silver medallist in the two-man with brakeman Florian Bauer.

Made his Olympic debut at PyeongChang 2018 finishing fifth in the two-man, after sitting in third, just 0.09 behind Canadian Justin Kripps, after the first two runs.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Since taking over as pilot in 2015, has only finished outside the medals on three occasions at the World Championships, winning three gold medals in non-Olympic team competition and one in the four-man bobsleigh. Has six silver medals and an additional two bronze.

His surprise silver medal in the two-man in 2015 came in his first season as a pilot. His previous career-high was fifth in the World Cup, achieved twice that season at St. Moritz and Innsbruck.

In 2017 on his home ice at Koenigssee, his four-man sled tied for the gold medal with the German Francesco Friedrich's sled with a time of 3:14.10, the first draw for the world title in the sport's 93-year history.

Two-time Junior World champion in 2016 (two-man, four-man) and 2014 silver medallist (four-man).

WORLD CUP
In 2017/18, won four of the eight four-man World Cup events to take the overall season title over compatriot Friedrich. With two podiums in the final two two-man events of the season, he placed third in the combined season standings behind Canadian Justin Kripps and Friedrich.

In 2020/21, finished as runner-up to Friedrich in the two-man season standings, winning only one World Cup event in Innsbruck. Friedrich won the 11 other events on the calendar, with Lochner ending up as runner-up in six of those races.
