:

Karlien Sleper, a former javelin thrower and current Dutch monobob pilot, encouraged her to try bobsleigh in 2015 because she was "strong and tough." They trained together in the Netherlands with Katrin Beierl - her current pilot - and then in Austria where they could utilise the push track. (thebrakeman.org, 23 Jun 2020; volkskrant.nl, 10 Jan 2021)

"I love that everyone is super professional, but nobody seems to dislike anyone. We’re all competing and want to be the best. But even when everyone is getting their game face on in warm ups, people will still goof with each other or do little handshakes and just show that camaraderie. That part for me is the most important, everyone is super competitive but also good friends still. I mean, in athletics you just hate your rivals and want to beat them so badly, and it's just not as positive a vibe as there is in bobsleigh." (thebrakeman.org, 23 Jun 2020)

Fell in love on her first descent. “I'm quite an adrenaline junkie. It felt like a roller coaster times a hundred." (volkskrant.nl, 28 Jan 2022)

:

To win a medal at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. (nos.nl, 3 Feb 2021)

:

Winning the 2020/21 World Cup in the two-woman with pilot Katrin Beierl. "Winning the World Cup is a dream. I did not expect it to ever come true." (nos.nl, 3 Feb 2021)

Tennis player Serena Williams (USA), four-time Olympic champion, winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles. (ibsf.org)

General Interest

CITIZENSHIP
Without funding from the Dutch Olympic Committee / Dutch Sports Federation, she began racing under the Austrian flag. In 2017/18, she helped two Austrian sleds qualify for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games but was unable to take part herself, as she had not yet been naturalised. Received her Austrian citizenship in December 2020, giving up her Dutch passport in the process.

"I first tried [competing] for the Netherlands, but unfortunately, that didn't work. Then I got a chance to sled for Austria and I grabbed it with both hands...Watching the opening ceremony at home was just horrible, I cried. I should’ve been there. We tried to get citizenship sorted for 2018 but it was just too quick a turnaround. I am and will remain Dutch. I have adopted an Austrian passport to make my Olympic dream come true. I walked this road to be able to go to the Games." (thebrakeman.org, 23 Jun 2020; nos.nl, 3 Feb 2021; nos.nl, 23 Nov 2020)

PARTNER
Her partner Thibault Demarthon has competed as a brakeman for Rudy Rinaldi's (MON) sled, and has also crewed with Frenchman Romain Heinrich in the 2021/22 season. (Facebook; ibsf.org)

BLACK LIVES MATTER
Onasanya's father is Nigerian, and her mother is Dutch. When she races, she wears spikes with the words "Say Their Names", as well as the names of victims of race-based violence in the United States. (volkskrant.nl, 28 Jan 2022)
