Began skiing at age two after receiving a pair of skis for her birthday. "I have been cross-country skiing for as long as I know. When I was about 10-years-old my father, a former biathlete himself, started the biathlon club in my home city Pitea. My dad was the coach and it was only natural that I’d join the training sessions. I was hooked immediately." (iceatrail.com, 1 Jun 2018; olympic.org, 5 Mar 2020)

"For me, biathlon has the ultimate blend of physical exertion and mental exertion. To push the body to its maximum in skiing and then switch to high precision and full focus in shooting. To stand on the last shot and shoot for medals and enjoy the situation. It's biathlon for me." (hanna-oberg.se, 1 Dec 2020)

:

Become the overall World Cup champion. "Winning the (overall) is very prestigious in biathlon and I hope that one day I will succeed. To do this I will have to concentrate on every single race, every single shot, every single lap on the track. All these things have to be put together so that I can do well. The victory of the overall World Cup is more important than the World (championship) gold. How many World golds would the World Cup be worth? I don't know." (fondoitalia.it, 12 Nov 2020)

Winning the 15km Individual at the 2019 World Championships in Oestersund. "I’m super happy, this means a lot to me. To do this on home soil with this audience, with my mother and father here, it’s unbelievable. I’m maybe even more proud of myself today than I was one year ago in the (PyeongChang 2018) Olympics. Last year it was so much of a surprise that this year I know I can do it and to be able to do it here today, it’s hard to describe." (eurosport.co.uk, 13 Mar 2019)

:

"This is a hard question for me since it is difficult to pick one. I would say that I look at many biathletes and just what makes them really good, and take inspiration from that. But of course, I have some that may have inspired me more than others: Helena Ekholm (SWE), Magdalena Neuner (GER) and Martin Fourcade (FRA) for example." (iceatrail.com, 1 Jun 2018)

:

"I have one song that has been with me from when I was pretty young as a biathlete and that's Hollaback Girl (Gwen Stefani). We had it when we were younger to get started before a competition and I think it is really fun." (IBU TV YouTube, 4 Dec 2019)

General Interest

BIG TIME FIRSTS
Gold in the 15km Individual at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games was her first senior victory and podium finish, with a fifth place in the World Cup her best achievement to date. Entering the race ranked 58th in the World Cup standings, she hit all 20 targets and finished 24.7 seconds ahead of silver medallist Anastasiya Kuzmina (SVK) who missed two shots. At age 22, became the youngest female biathlete to win an Olympic gold medal, and the youngest biathlete to win a gold and silver medal at the same Games, after winning silver in the women’s relay.

"I’m amazed at myself and very surprised. I would never have believed this was possible. Winning this race is just incredible. I can’t believe my performance. I’m so happy I shot clear too. I have shot four times clean only one time before, but I was really focused on the range today. The skiing was great also. I do not know, I just managed it somehow today." (olympic.org, 26 Mar 2018; olympic.org, 15 Feb 2018)

SISTERLY LOVE
Younger sister, Elvira, joined the senior national team in 2019. The pair first shared the podium in an individual event at the World Cup in Kontiolahti, in December 2020, with Hanna winning the 7.5km Sprint and Elvira finishing third. As teammates, they won their first relay title at the same event, after two podium finishes during the 2019/20 season.

"It’s so much fun to have her on the team now, and it’s also inspiring for me. I’m teaching her everything that I know but she knows how biathlon works since she’s new at the World Cup. How you walk to the start, where you have the weapon control and the practical things with the media." (olympic.org, 5 Mar 2020; time24.news, 3 Dec 2020)

FORMER BOYFRIEND
Lived together with Swedish biathlete Jesper Nelin, but broke up in 2020.

CHILDHOOD
Born in Kiruna in Norrbotten, she moved with her family to Pitea as a child. Subsequently, she attended ski school in Solleftea before moving to Oestersund.
