His parents encouraged him to try many sports. First, he fell in love with Alpine skiing, and then he tried cross-country skiing as his mother trained in the sport when she was younger. At his cross-country club he found out about biathlon and started to watch the sport on television. His coach got the idea to try shooting and he liked it and followed biathlon more and more. General Interest

SWITCHING NATIONALITIES
Representing Croatia, he moved to Slovenia in 2009 to train with their national team and coach Uros Velepec (SLO). After competing for his homeland at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, including carrying their flag at the opening ceremony, he announced he would be switching to Slovenia to start the 2010/11 season. "I love my country and its people and I will always be a Croat, but my federation just did not have the ability to train me the best way possible. I needed better training conditions and knew I would be better off with the Slovenian team." (biathlonworld3.de, 18 Feb 2009; croatiantimes.com, 16 Feb 2010)

FROSTBITE
In February 2011, he suffered severe frostbite on his trigger finger while competing at the World Cup in Fort Kent, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season. He initially did not realise the gravity of the situation until the finger started to turn black. Weeks of daily treatment in a hyperbaric chamber allowed the finger to regain normal circulation, but resulted in the loss of all of the skin. He had to undergo an extended period of protecting the new tender skin from infections, before he was able to resume normal training in mid-2011.
