Grew up in a family enthusiastic about sports and as his father was a former cross-country skier, he started cross-country skiing at an early age. At national cross-country skiing competitions, he noticed that the "fun" biathlon race with the air rifle was actually more fun than his actual race. He then took part in various biathlon competitions and finally switched to biathlon at age 15.

"What I like most is the combination of fast running and the calm and concentration at the shooting range. As a top athlete, you must be able to master both sports. In addition, it is an exciting sport, as there can be several changes in the entire classification up to the last shot." (joschaburkhalter.ch)

"A dream is certainly an Olympic participation and a World Cup podium." (swiss-ski.ch, 17 Jan 2018)

:

Making his World Cup debut at the Ruhpolding relay in January 2018. "To run in the World Cup for the first time in front of such a crowd was simply an amazing feeling." (swiss-ski.ch, 17 Jan 2018)
