Born in Brazil, but at age three his family moved to the United States where his father Alfredo attended chiropractic school in Portland, Oregon. His father had learned to ski in Chile and took the family to Mount Hood (Oregon) to ski, and as Michel and his brother Tobias progressed, coach Curtis Shuck helped connect the family to the Brazilian ski federation.
