The two met and his father started an engineering job and they moved to Fort McMurray, AB in the 1990s, where he was born. They were on hand as he was a part of Eritrea's Olympic Winter Games debut at PyeongChang 2018. "Eritrea was a country that fought for independence for almost 30 years, and they're very proud of me for being able to carry on my roots and my heritage." (cbc.ca, 28 Dec 2017; fortmcmurraytoday.com, 3 Jan 2018)

ADVOCATE FOR SKIERS OF COLOUR
"I hope that through my participation in Olympic Winter Games, I can pave the path forward for other people of colour to participate. Being one of the very few people of colour in my sport, it has had an impact on my life. I do not want others like myself to be afraid of stepping outside their comfort zone." (shannonabeda.com)
